- Many PTTs do not offer pure galvanic "dry" copper connections (as needed for baseband modems) or cannot guarantee that the whole link will be over copper wire. Most analogue leased lines are routed via the telephony infrastructure using PCM or carrier systems. For these lines the only option is to use a voice band type of modem that uses signals that can be transported via the telephone network.
- In a great number of countries, voiceband transmission is still the only option because of the lack of a long distance digital infrastructure.
- Voiceband modems in combination with analogue leased lines offer a cost effective alternative to digital leased lines for data rates below 64 Kbps.
- Voiceband modems can be used over long-distance lines and voice channels of radio systems. Baseband and DSL modems can only cover a limited distance which depends on the transmitted data rate.
